Deep Cove, or as it was first known Deepwater, is a community in the furthest eastern part of the Indian Arm of District of North Vancouver. Historically Deep Cove was a small fishing and clamming area where the native Squamish Salish nation lived for thousands of years. In the 18th century Spanish and English naval explorers ‘discovered’ this part of the Indian Arm and by the mid 19th Century whales were being caught and flensed off the shores of Deep Cove. In the early 20th Century, Deep Cove became a popular summer location for visitors from other parts of Vancouver to own cabins. Logging and granite quarrying also feature in Deep Cove’s history. In the 1960s and early 70’s the population of Deep Cove slowly grew after the construction of the Second Narrows bridge in 1960. Today Deep Cove is known as a rather unique location. With its close proximity to the mountains, water and parks, Deep Cove offers outdoor recreation enthusiasts the perfect place for sports such as kayaking, rowing, mountain biking and is ideal for mooring pleasure vessels. Homes in Deep Cove range from the old ‘character’ homes to new homes, with a few homes even having their own moorage on the waterfront. Famous residents in Deep Cove have included the actor Ben Affleck who lived there in the early 2000s, writer Malcolm Lowry and Canadian artist Charles Van Sandwyck. There are two schools in the community, (Cove Cliff Elementary, and Seycove Secondary) as well as two other schools in the surrounding area.
